![]() Intriguing? I certainly thought so when I went along to my first gig in April 2015, and listened to live music in a coffee shop while watching the sun set over the Clyde. The location is not released until the day before and you don’t find out who is playing until you get there. That might not seem a lot, considering I’ve applied to go to one every month since I first discovered what they were in 2014.Īnd what they are is this: secret intimate gigs held in homes or tiny public spaces. Credit: Amy BeveridgeThis is my third Sofar Sounds gig in as many years. Glad I went for free.Joe Dolman playing his set. ![]() Maybe felt like that because we were the "still in college 21 year olds with no pocket change that hopped into the roped off area with a homie" crowd.īut according to the other dude they don't pay their artists beans? That's fucked tbh. I think there was a solid spread of age ranges, but it felt marketed to the "straight out of college 20-somethings with a little pocket change to have a hip date" crowd. (But tbf we were told "show up at bar where the guys is playing for free", not "buy this date-focused intimate lounge concert ticket"). We were I think a bit too young, broke, and underdressed for it. It was me and a college homie in jeans and a t-shirt. Bar was over priced ($20 for Jack and coke), but I think that's more venue than SoFar. One was who we came to see (Wiley from Atlanta, who is phenomenal), the other was an acoustic/indie kinda dude. Was a pretty cool concept - we were in a lounge/bar that sat maybe 50 people on couches or even the ground (we were within a few yards of the performance). Snuck into a SoFar sounds show in Austin a few weeks ago (to see a particular artist, didn't even know it was a ticketed event).
